Education is crucial for both individual and collective progress, yet educational inequalities persist. The EDUFAIR project addresses the challenges of educational inequalities in Italy through a theoretically grounded approach to defining unjust inequalities. Using the concept of quantitative intersectionality, it examines how different stratification factors shape educational opportunities. It applies advanced computational methods to INVALSI student population data in order to map educational inequalities and assess the effectiveness of local policies.
The project collects information on local interventions aimed at tackling poverty and educational inequality, studies the territorial characteristics that facilitate the adoption of such policies, and evaluates their effectiveness. EDUFAIR has four key objectives. First, it aims to develop a clear conceptualization and a robust measurement of Inequality of Educational Opportunity (IEOp) and Educational Poverty (EPov), building on established frameworks of social justice and advanced statistical methods. Second, it seeks to analyze the distribution of IEOp and EPov across Italian regions, identifying territorial patterns and examining the relationship between students’ competences, school effectiveness, and inequality. Third, it aims to identify and classify the main local policies designed to reduce educational inequalities, exploring geographic patterns and the territorial characteristics that drive the adoption of such interventions. Finally, it seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these policies in reducing IEOp and EPov, examining whether they produce a positive impact. The overall goal is to inform strategies to reduce inequalities and promote educational equity in Italy.
